Job Description: Essential Position Functions

The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and other key duties that may be required. Primary Duties:

  • Evaluates students with motor impairments to assess level of functional performance and educationally relevant physical disabilities.
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress quarterly, and informs IEP team members of changes, problems, and needs.
  • Documents progress on student performance at least quarterly.
  • Supervises and programs programming for itinerant and/or program based paraprofessionals as they carry out specific activities to improve student functional motor performance.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments in equipment such as braces, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.
  • Facilitates the attainment of fabrication of adapted furniture, such as chairs, tables, and trays to permit optimum supports for learning.
  • Manages and organizes the district's inventory of adapted equipment and materials.
  • Consults with multidisciplinary teams to determine educationally relevant goals and objectives.
  • Participates in IEP meetings as needed.
  • Communicates with medical service providers when necessary to ensure consistent programming efforts and common student goals.
  • Informs IEP team members of changes, problems, and needs based upon student progress.
  • Maintains regular communication with classroom teachers.
  • Consults with staff and parents regarding therapeutic exercises, teaching strategies for functional skill improvement, equipment use, local resources, etc.
  • Makes home visits when appropriate to provide a continuum of opportunities for students.
  • Provides staff training when appropriate.
  • Possesses familiarity with the M.O.V.E. curriculum or willingness to learn and implement programming.
  • Translates medical information and therapeutic assessment into educationally relevant objectives.

Additional Qualifications

  • Must possess current Colorado State Physical Therapy License (DORA)
  • Minimum B.A. degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited university
  • Understands human growth and development as it relates to motor performance
  • Possesses knowledge of childhood diseases, congenital defects, and brain injury as it relates to motor learning
  • Possesses understanding of orthopedic alignment and its impact on motor learning and motor performance
  • Possesses understanding of spinal kinematics as it pertains to body mechanics, lifting, and posturing
  • Prior experience in a school setting is preferred

This position supports multiple schools, must have reliable transportation.

May be required to lift students and/or equipment at times. Should be able to kneel, floor sit, and access playground equipment in order to interact with students.

  • Valid Colorado Department of Education Special Services Provider License
  • Ability to accurately assess need and provide a range of appropriate services to students

Salary/Pay: Salary is dependent on a review of your experience and education.

Additional Information:

New Applicants: Please note that if you are hired by District 20, fingerprinting is required. You will be responsible for the fingerprinting charge at the Colorado Springs Police Department as well as for the FBI charge.

All special education positions require the ability to safely lift 50 pounds each in a two person lift.

Primary consideration will be given to transfer requests from schools that need to reduce staff.
